Vietnamese Superstition Strikes AGAIN!

I gave my mom a set of OXO kitchen knives and peelers for Mother's Day.
I got a dollar from her in return.

What? Yeah. I was confused too.

Till she told me that it was bad to send someone knives or handkerchiefs. Apparently it means you want to break off the relationship. But if you send them a dollar in return as if you were paying for it, then you're fine.

WHAT?

I don't get it. But you're not supposed to. It's superstition. It's irrational. So I just laughed it off and accepted her dollar. It was so funny getting one dollar in the mail from my mom. Maybe I'll give her a 50 cent handkerchief next time and make some profit. oh yeah! haha.

(p.s. she likes the knives and says it cuts really well. which was the whole point because she's been using the same dull knives for years and accidentally cutting herself because of it.)

Map of New York on a Handkerchief

Muji never ceases to amaze me with their cool concepts and clean design. wish i was a guy that actually uses handkerchiefs, but this is too cool to blow my nose on anyway. might be useful if i ever visit new york and get lost though.

for now, it'll be the art piece over my bed. i think the label on the right makes it more of a gallery piece too.

Not the right David Ngo

I get e-mails directed to the wrong "David Ngo" all the time. Usually it's from some Doctor named David Ngo or someone looking to get employment with someone named David Ngo. Today, I got the most hilarious version:

We're on for 7:00 p.m. on Monday at my offices to go over the allegations in Poon's lawsuit. I am in the MetLife Building above Grand Central.

First of all, so many Davids involved in this matter. But most importantly, why is POON suing ROOMORAMA? And what the heck is ROOMORAMA? My best guess is ROOMORAMA is a robot carpet vacuum and Poon "accidentally" stuck his penis into the vacuum and his little poon was horribly mangled. I hope Roomorama doesn't settle for too much money. hahah

Burden of Proof: a classic example of faulty logic, that you need to look out for in your next debate:

I recently posted a link on my facebook status about how Barack Obama claimed that his stimulus plan saved/created 150,000 jobs. When the facts were checked, it was clear that the economy has lost 1.3 million jobs. So how could Obama make such a claim? Well simple. He lied.

When faced with this clear fault by the president, a marxist aquaintance of mine chimed in to defend his political idol:

Zach: "i'm not defending that claim, but can you disprove it? you can't. cause he could have saved the economy from losing 1.45 million jobs. seriously. your comments are asinine. you know nothing about economics."

asking someone to "disprove" something is the first sign of faulty logic. one must always remember that the one who presents new information or makes a claim has the burden of proof. not the person who has NOT made the claim. I responded jokingly (thinking he understood this principle):

Me: "In that case, I have saved 1 billion people from bear attacks. You can't DISPROVE that. You know nothing about logic."

he ignorantly replied, once again asking me to disprove something that couldn't be disproven:

Zach: "yes i can. the concept that you have saved 1,000,000,000 people from bear attacks is highly unlikely. you've lived in pa, ma, and ca. there are only 6 billion people on the planet. can you explain to me, using economic theory, why obama has not saved 150,000 jobs?"

sigh. now i know he is overlooking this crucial logical principle. So i decide to teach him about it:

ME: sigh. let me try again Zach. It's very important that you understand this logical principle, so you don't go asking everyone to disprove every unprovable claim you read.

Using the example I gave. I can say, "I saved a billion people from bears by doing a dance. There are a billion people still alive, so clearly my dance saved them from the bear attacks."

I have just claimed something than cannot be disproven. Causality cannot be proven either. Thus, the only logical conclusion to be made is that I made it up. Since no one has any evidence that can logically point to such a claim, it is a lie. period.

Obama said, "I have saved 150,000 jobs through my stimulus plan." Similarly, there is no way to DISPROVE this, or any way to prove causality as to exactly why a particular job was "saved", and definitely not so specific of a number. Thus, since no one, even Obama himself, can prove such a claim, it is logically a lie. He came to a conclusion without evidence or proof.

Do you understand now Zach? If not, I don't know how else to explain it to you. But if you need examples of people making such unprovable claims and then asking others to DISPROVE it, look no further than religion. Or think about someone in a court of law claiming you murdered 50 people with your voice, then saying you are guilty until you DISPROVE it. It's illogical.

Racial Preferences

How come many people would say this is a picture of two prominent Black Americans, but no one would say this is a picture of a prominent asian and white american?

Both seem to be equally true. But their success is attached to their "black" heritage, not their white or asian heritage.

Seems kind of irrational and unfair.

Some might say it's their Black heritage they had to overcome, thus their success is attributed to that.

But I don't think that makes much sense.

What do you think?
